Cover of NAVA Quarterly, September

My work Life Preservers is on the front cover of NAVA Quarterly.

Life preservers is a project which shows off the latest footwear and dresses I designed for global warming.

In this work five women model dresses from a collection of clothing called Life Preservers in the streets of Cologne, Germany The dresses play on an amusing imaginary double bind of the extremes of climate change: to fill the plastic bottles festooned on the outer layer of the dresses, would be good for drought, but would make one sink in the event of a flood, and vice versa.

Anne Zahalka and I will be talking about our collaborative project Dazzle - a participatory work of performance art that will see a Naval ship made out of human bodies and filmed from a Naval helicopter.

Dazzle is a significant project that seeks to contemporise and commemorate the history of camouflage in the Navy and build relationships across Naval personnel and civilians.

Please see here for more details.

An exhibition by 15 established and emerging artists who have created new works of art in response to HMAS Penguin naval base, Middle Head and Sydney Harbour National Park.

Artists include: Geraldine Berkemeier, Mark Brown, Sophie Cape, Tom Carment, Nicole Ellis, Jumaadi, Ro Murray, Peter Nelson, Catherine O'Donnell, Ben Quilty, Sylvia Schwenk, Abdulla Syed, Jason WIng and Anne Zahalka

I will be exhibiting two works.

A Naval Novella is a short film which shows the human side of the Navy, uniquely allowing people to access a closed culture in an inviting way. The work is anchored by the naval tradition of tattoos and gruelling physical training done with ‘the rope’, a symbol of union, mateship and stability.

Unfortunately the Navy has asked that all images and references to tattoos are removed from the film that is screened in this exhibition.

An extract from the film with a [N] rating for viewing with Naval guidance will be screened.

The other work has been created with Anne Zahalka and is a Study for a work of participatory performance called Dazzle.

This work when realised will see a Naval ship made out of peoples bodies in a dazzle camouflage pattern.

3 to 11 July (from 3 to 9pm)

Sunday, 7 July at 5pm

Artereal Gallery

Nine artists. Nine collaborative projects. Nine days. Nine exhibition openings.

My film A shared space will be screened on Sunday 7 July. I will be in the gallery from 5-7pm so I hope to see you there.

This film gives a rare insight into what happens before and after a funeral service.
The video opens on a graveyard on a beautiful serene sunny day. Grave diggers are working in a quiet, harmonious way with almost choreographed movements, preparing a grave for a burial. The birds are chirping, the sun is shining - but all is not as it seems - there is a twist.

Other artists included in this exhibition: Ella Barcley, Liam Benson, David Capra, Bridie Connell, Charles Dennington & Tully Arnot, Nola Diamantopolous,  Leahlani Johnston and Karina Wikamto.

Project

I have been invited to participate in a new exciting new project commissioned by the Mosman Art Gallery, Sydney. The project will see 14 emerging and established artists making works in response to an active navy base (HMAS Penguin), as well as the disused tunnels, fortifications and buildings that were once the key defence points for Sydney Harbour (based at Sydney Harbour National Park and Georges Heights).
These works will be shown in an exhibition later in the year at Mosman Art Gallery.

The project is curated by Katrina Cashman, John Cheeseman and Julie Petersen.

Artists include: Geraldine Berkemeier, Mark Brown, Sophie Cape, Tom Carment, Nicole Ellis, Jumaadi, Ro Murray, Peter Nelson, Catherine O'Donnell, Ben Quilty, Sylvia Schwenk, Abdulla Syed, Jason WIng and Anne Zahalka
